CAMP DESIGN ONLINE

A Learning Community for Bringing Courses Online

As much of education moves toward a future that blends digital and in-person learning in flexible ways, we invite you to join us for Camp Design Online. During camp, we’ll work together to create online, hybrid, and flexible learning environments, guided by research-based practices for good online learning design.

We hope that by evoking our natural world and by alluding to human gatherings in nature that we might see how digital pedagogy encourages playful exploration within communities of learners. Pack your gear, let’s hit the trails and streams and set our sights on possible horizons together!

Camp Dates

We will be offering sessions of camp to support faculty in preparing for J-Term 2021 and the Spring 2021 semester:

November 30-December 11, 2020 – Registration for this session is now closed

What does camp involve?

Camp Design Online offers a cohort-based, primarily asynchronous learning experience, facilitated by DLINQ’s online learning experts.

Camp Design Online uses a modular structure, with 6 different modules of content related to online learning design. You can find a list of topics toward the bottom of this page. For each module, you’ll find:

- Multimedia content, to introduce you to the ideas underlying online course design
- A daily checklist of activities, which offer suggestions for engaging with the content in order to deepen your understanding of online course design theory and practice
- A key assignment that you can turn in for individualized feedback from DLINQ staff.

In addition, we’ll be using Canvas as a place to turn in assignments, and as a community space to connect with your peers and DLINQ staff. We will also be offering optional, synchronous office hours via Zoom, where DLINQ staff will be available to answer questions and facilitate conversation (schedule of synchronous sessions TBD).

How do I participate?

There are 3 trails that you can take through a session of camp. Campers taking the Preparing a Fully Online Course trail will join us for the full 2 weeks of camp (Nov. 30 – Dec. 11); campers taking the Preparing a Flexible Course Structure trail will join us for one week (Nov. 30 – Dec. 4). The A La Carte trail allows campers to dip in and out as needed. Check out the 3 Trail Maps below to decide which is right for you.

Preparing a Fully Online Course: 2 Weeks

We recommend this trail for faculty who would like to develop skills in creating a fully online course. Campers on this trail will participate in camp for 6 modules of content spread out over 2 weeks.

Topics covered
- Module 1: Introduction to the Community of Inquiry framework & Middlebury Online Course Design Rubric
- Module 2: Backward design, course mapping, and sequencing
- Module 3: Building a course shell in Canvas and Creating a holistic communication plan
- Module 4: Flexible assignments, activities, and interactions
- Module 5: Flexible course content
- Module 6: Building community and sustaining interaction
Outcome: At the end of 2 weeks, you’ll have a better understanding of processes, frameworks, and approaches used to create effective and engaging online learning; a course structure created in Canvas; and you will be well on your way to designing engaging and effective content, interactions, activities, and assessments.
Time commitment: 4-6 hours/week for 2 weeks to complete all 6 modules

Preparing a Flexible Course Structure: 1 Week

We recommend this trail for faculty who want to have a flexible structure in place that will allow them to respond to multiple scenarios; or, for faculty who are planning to build out a hybrid (partly online, partly f2f) course. This trail includes 3 modules content spread out over 1 week.

Outcome: At the end of the week, you’ll have a better understanding of processes, frameworks, and approaches used to create effective and engaging online learning; a modular course structure mapped out and built out in Canvas, as well as created a holistic communication plan.
Time commitment: 4-6 hours/week for 1 week to complete the 3 modules

A la carte

We recommend this trail for faculty who would like to learn more about specific topics, but not go through a structured course experience. You can dip in and out of the modules your own pace, and participate in other camp activities as needed.
